Professor Sir Jim Smith
Jim Smith is a developmental biologist who served as Director of the Gurdon Institute and then of the Medical Research Council (MRC) National Institute for Medical Research, where he helped establish the Francis Crick Institute. He is President of the Zoological Society of London, and until recently was Director of Research Programmes at Wellcome.
Among other positions, Jim is a member of the Development Board of EDIS (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Science and Health), of the Board of Health Data Research UK, and of the British Library Advisory Council. He was Editor-in-Chief of the journal Development from 2003 to 2009. Jim is a member of EMBO and in 1993 was awarded the EMBO Medal. He was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society in 1993 and of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 1998 and is a member of the Academia Europaea. He was knighted in 2017.
