UKRIO moves toward a wider pool of funders and supporters

UKRIO is implementing a subscription model to ensure that our key users – universities, NHS bodies, charities and private sector organisations – and their researchers continue to have the benefit of our vital services. This is in accordance with the original proposal for UKRIO, which indicated we should move to a wider pool of funders after our first phase, and we already have confirmed supporters from the Russell and 1994 Groups of universities.

Research organisations will be asked to contribute a modest annual fee and make an initial commitment for three years. This will give UKRIO a suitable period to further develop its service model to continue to meet the increasing demands made of it. We will also be approaching other relevant bodies to seek their support for our continuing work.

Though these are uncertain times for the funding of many organisations, UKRIO has clearly demonstrated that its services are required and that it fills a gap in the research community that is not provided by any other UK institution.

Private individuals will not be asked to subscribe or otherwise pay a fee for our assistance. Persons with concerns about the conduct of research must not be hindered from coming forward. Those individuals who need support from UKRIO – researchers, research participants, patients and the public – will continue to use our services for free.

UKRIO will remain a not-for-profit body and, to reflect our nature, will be seeking charitable status in 2011. We will not share confidential information about our work with our subscribers or any other third parties.
