On 13 May, UKRIO held its 2026 symposium, marking an important milestone in the organisation’s work and providing an opportunity to reflect on its growth and journey over recent years, alongside looking ahead to the future of research integrity in a rapidly evolving research landscape.
Bringing together researchers, policymakers, funders, and practitioners from across the research system, the symposium explored how research integrity underpins a thriving, innovative, and trusted research culture, and its central role in supporting national ambitions for growth, knowledge, and innovation.

The 2026 symposium was UKRIO’s largest to date, reflecting broad engagement from across disciplines, sectors, and roles within the research community.
THEME
Research integrity as a driver for growth, knowledge, and innovation
This year’s symposium explored the UK Government’s renewed focus on research as a catalyst for economic growth and innovation, and the essential role of research integrity in delivering these ambitions. It considered how strong integrity frameworks support high-quality, reproducible research, foster public trust, and enable collaboration across sectors.
Morning programme
For the first time, the morning session was open to the public. It featured:
- A keynote discussion between UKRIO’s Chair of Trustees, Professor Dame Linda Partridge, and Lord Patrick Vallance, Minister of State for Science, Research and Innovation
- A panel discussion bringing together speakers from across the research system, offering perspectives on research assessment, policymaking, public engagement, and research culture
Afternoon programme
The afternoon session was reserved for UKRIO subscriber organisations and included:
- An inspirational talk by Virginia Burkett, reflecting on her experience defending climate science within the US federal research system
- Interactive, peer-led good practice forums, enabling attendees to share approaches to strengthening research integrity in their work
- Updates on UKRIO’s recent activity, including an overview of the organisation’s forthcoming strategy
