Advisory council and Expert community

Advisory council and Expert community

UKRIO’s activities are supported by a network of expert volunteers and advisors who form our Advisory council and Expert community. These individuals draw on their diverse experience and expertise across different areas of research to guide UKRIO’s work, inform our strategic direction, and support key services, including our confidential Advisory service. Their insight ensures that UKRIO’s activities are grounded in real-world practice and reflect a holistic understanding of research integrity challenges across varied research environments.

The Trustees, members of the Advisory council, and members of the Expert community are not employees of UKRIO; they generously contribute their time on a voluntary basis. UKRIO’s work relies on their expert support, which enables the organisation to operate effectively. UKRIO has secured appropriate insurance cover for Trustees, Advisory council members, and Expert community members acting on behalf of the organisation.

Advisory council

The Advisory council is Co-Chaired by a UKRIO Trustee and consists of members selected for their expertise in research integrity and related issues, as well as independent and lay members. Its function is to advise on, and oversee, the strategy and programme of work of UKRIO. Unlike the Trustees, the Advisory Council hold no legal responsibility for the organisation.

Expert community

UKRIO is supported by a dedicated Expert community of more than 35 volunteers. Their insight ensures our work stays closely aligned with the real needs and concerns of the research community.

Our experts play a vital role across UKRIO’s activities – most notably in our Advisory service, where they help us provide clear, informed guidance on promoting good research practice, strengthening research culture, and addressing concerns about poor practice or misconduct. They offer advice on both general enquiries and specific projects or cases, and they also contribute feedback on UKRIO’s wider programme of work.

Our experts agree to comply with a Volunteer Policy and Agreement.

Members of the Expert community are recruited for their experience and expertise in research integrity. They come from a wide range of backgrounds, including:

  • Researchers across all academic disciplines
  • Senior research institution managers
  • Professional services and administrative staff
  • Journal editors and publication ethics specialists
  • Statisticians
  • Representatives of regulatory, funding or professional bodies
  • Research ethics specialists
  • Research integrity officers
  • Others involved in improving research practice and culture, from formal roles to grassroots initiatives.

Joining our Expert community

UKRIO is actively recruiting volunteers for our Expert community. This offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to how we shape research integrity policy in the UK and to help people faced with challenges to good research practice.
