Publication of ‘Research integrity: a landscape study’

Today UKRI publishes a new report, Research Integrity: A Landscape study. The study, carried out by Vitae, in partnership with UKRIO and the UKRN, considers the effects of incentives in the research system on researcher behaviour in the context of research integrity. It also considers how these incentives are perceived by different stakeholders and the impact of these incentives on researcher behaviour and organisational practices more broadly.

Sir Ian Boyd, Chair of UKRIO said:

“This report contains many messages about what might be done to improve research integrity and, with this, the trust in research outputs. For example, constructing incentives appropriately comes out very strongly and much can be done to improve these by employers and funders. The fact that this process has begun is good news. UKRIO is proud to have participated in this research study and will continue to work with UKRI and others to address the issues raised in the report.”

The study was conducted through a literature review, interviews with 20 representatives of stakeholder organisations, workshops, and a survey, collectively reaching 1500+ researchers and other individuals in the UK research system. The scope was limited to the UK research system, recognising however that this sits within the broader global research environment. To read the report, click on the link: https://www.ukri.org/about-us/policies-and-standards/research-integrity/.

UKRIO will be hosting a webinar in July discussing Research Integrity: a landscape study, with speakers from UKRI, Vitae and other organisations. To register for a place at this free event, go to https://www.tickettailor.com/events/ukresearchintegrityofficeukrio/378683
