Research Ethics Committee (REC) Workshops
A dedicated space for REC members and those who support RECs
Throughout the programme year, UKRIO is hosting a new series of Research Ethics Committee Workshops. This series of six workshops is designed specifically for REC members and those who support RECs. Each session is limited to 35 participants, allowing time to discuss and explore ethics review in a range of contexts.
These sessions will comprise an introduction to the workshop topic (for around 30 minutes), and then feature a case study discussion, ending with open group discussions.
You are welcome to come to the session with specific challenges or anonymised case studies to discuss, though it may not always be possible to get through all questions.
Attendance is limited to REC members and chairs, as well as individuals who support RECs. Registrants will be notified by email once their registration details have been confirmed and approved.

Format: Online webinar, hosted via Zoom
Access: Members of UKRIO subscriber organisations. Registrations must be made using an email address affiliated with a subscriber organisation. You can view a list of active UKRIO subscribers here.
Capacity: Approximately 35 attendees per session

Can I attend more than one session?
Please register for your preferred sessions. Although it may be possible to attend more than one session, places cannot be guaranteed and we may contact you about your choices.
Who is the trainer?
Simon Kolstoe. Simon is a Professor of Research Ethics (Portsmouth) and UKRIO Associate Trainer. His work focuses on research ethics and integrity, particular within medical and defence contexts. He works closely with the Health Research Authority and contributes to a range of national committees and governance initiatives. He chairs the Research Ethics and Governance Group at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), the Ministry of Defence Research Ethics Committee (MODREC) and is a member of the NIHR’s Public Health Research Ethics Committee.
Who can attend UKRIO REC workshops?
Anyone who supports or serves on a REC and is affiliated with a subscriber organisation.
Can I attend as a researcher submitting to RECs?
The session is aimed at only those who are REC members, reviewers, chairs, or supporting staff (such as Research Integrity leads or REC secretaries)
Are webinars recorded for later viewing?
Session may be recorded for internal purposes. We reserve the right to make decisions on dissemination and publication.
What is UKRIO’s position on its speakers’ views?
UKRIO is an apolitical organisation and does not provide a platform for political views. Any views, advice or recommendations expressed in its online events are those of the speakers alone and should not be taken as an endorsement from UKRIO.
Can I ask questions?
Yes, we encourage you to engage as much as possible with the workshop. These sessions will have discussion time and typically feature dedicated discussion sections at the end of presentations. We kindly request that all questions remain respectful and on topic.
Will I receive a certificate of attendance?
At this time UKRIO is unable to send certificates of attendance to attendees.
Can I ask for advice or raise concerns about a situation during a workshop?
Yes – however, in the interest of confidentiality, please also direct these matters to our Advisory Service.
