Workshop series: Core procedure to investigate breaches of research integrity

Workshop series:

Core procedure to investigate breaches of research integrity

Research organisations often face challenges when responding to concerns about potential breaches of research integrity. In response to growing demand for practical support in this area, UKRIO is developing a new Core procedure to investigate breaches of research integrity.

UKRIO is inviting representatives from research organisations to contribute to the development of the resource through a series of interactive workshops in July 2026. Participants will review and discuss key elements of the draft procedure, helping to ensure that it is practical, flexible, and relevant across a wide range of research settings.

About the Core procedure
The Core procedure is designed to help organisations establish clear, proportionate, and practical processes for investigating concerns about research integrity. Developed as a streamlined companion to UKRIO’s Detailed procedure, it is intended particularly for organisations with limited capacity or experience in this area, including smaller organisations, under-resourced institutions, and sectors where formal approaches to investigating research integrity concerns are less established.

Register for a workshop

Representatives from research organisations can register to attend one of the workshops using the links below. Places are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

🔗 Workshop 1
Tuesday 14 July, 10:00–12:00

🔗 Workshop 2
Thursday 23 July, 14:00–16:00

Participants are only expected to attend one session, as both workshops will cover the same content. To support broad participation across the sector, organisations are asked to nominate no more than one representative.

Research organisations have increasingly highlighted the challenges involved in responding to concerns about research integrity. UKRIO’s report, Barriers to Investigating and Reporting Research Misconduct, identified a lack of clarity, confidence, and organisational support as key barriers to handling such concerns effectively.

To help address these challenges, UKRIO is developing a Core procedure to investigate breaches of research integrity. The resource aims to provide organisations with a practical framework for handling concerns fairly, consistently, and effectively, while remaining adaptable to different organisational contexts.

The workshops will bring together participants from across the research community, representing a range of disciplines, sectors, and professional roles. Attendees will be invited to review key aspects of the draft procedure and share insights from their own organisational experience.

By participating, organisations will have the opportunity to help shape a sector-wide resource that supports a stronger and more consistent approach to addressing breaches of research integrity across the research ecosystem.

The workshops are intended for individuals with responsibility for, or experience of, handling concerns about potential breaches of research integrity within their organisation. This may include research integrity officers, named contacts, governance and compliance staff, senior research leaders, or others involved in managing investigations and related processes.

Ideally, participants will be familiar with their organisation’s current approach to responding to concerns about research integrity and able to contribute insights from their organisational context.
