Pilot new training on investigating breaches of research integrity

Investigating breaches of research integrity
Join our train-the-trainer pilot
In response to growing demand across the research sector, UKRIO is developing in-depth training to strengthen knowledge, understanding, and confidence in assessing and investigating potential breaches of research integrity. Developed with input from a cross-sector working group, the training is designed for those who oversee, manage, or participate in investigations.
We are inviting research organisations to pilot the materials as they are shaped into a train-the-trainer model. Participant organisations will deliver the training within their organisation and provide feedback to inform further refinement and improvement.
The pilot will run for six months and will support the creation of a sustainable model that enables organisations to deliver the training independently.

About the training
There is increasing evidence of the need for comprehensive, practical training for those involved in investigating research misconduct, including findings from UKRIO’s report Barriers to Investigating and Reporting Research Misconduct. Training in this area is also required under the Concordat to Support Research Integrity.
To address this need, UKRIO convened a cross-sector working group to develop new, in-depth training.
The programme is designed for individuals involved in investigating and addressing alleged breaches of research integrity, including those who oversee and manage investigations (such as research integrity officers and named persons), and those who serve on investigations panels.
Organisations participating in the pilot will have the opportunity to deliver the training to staff in these roles.
Learning outcomes
Following delivery of the training, participants will be able to:
- explain the principles of research integrity and identify what constitutes a breach
- understand the roles and responsibilities of those involved in investigations
- apply UKRIO’s recommended procedures – or their institution’s own procedures – for investigating breaches
- implement best practice when handling concerns, including maintaining confidentiality and ensuring procedural fairness
- communicate appropriately with relevant stakeholders about investigations and their outcomes
- build organisational capacity to train investigation panel members effectively.
