Embracing AI with integrity

Embracing AI with integrity
A practical guide for researchers
The UK Research Integrity Office (UKRIO) has launched new guidance to help researchers navigate the research integrity challenges posed by Artificial Intelligence (AI).
About the guidance
Embracing AI with integrity supports researchers in using AI tools responsibly – whether for writing assistance, data analysis, prediction, or other research tasks. It responds to growing concerns about AI’s impact on research integrity and offers practical advice to help researchers uphold ethical standards and good research practice.
Who it’s for
This guidance is suited for researcher practitioners at all career stages and across disciplines, as well as research leaders, managers, and administrators.
Key integrity risk areas
The document offers insight and recommendations across five core areas:
- Breaching laws, regulations, and conditions
- Ethical considerations
- Protecting the research record
- Research dissemination
- Creativity and critical thinking
Scope
This document provides guidance informed by research integrity principles. It is not a substitute for legal advice, technical training in AI, or guidance on research misconduct procedures.
Why this guidance is needed
Our 2024 stakeholder survey revealed strong demand for clear, practical support on AI in research. As AI adoption grows rapidly, many researchers face inconsistent or unclear advice, with institutions, funders, and journals developing policies at different speeds.
This guidance – part of UKRIO’s priority workstream on AI and research integrity – helps fill that gap, providing a flexible, researcher-focused resource that works across disciplines and technologies.
What you can do
- Researchers: Use the guidance to assess and strengthen your practices when using AI, and to reflect critically on its impact on your work.
- Organisations and research leaders: Integrate the guidance into policies, training, and support structures for your teams.
We welcome feedback and collaboration to ensure this guidance evolves alongside AI. To get involved, contact us at info@ukrio.org.
